Town council supports crime prevention day

Officers from the South Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team held a crime prevention day at The Broadway Centre offering advice and help with scams and fraud, and staying safe on-line.

The event provided an opportunity for residents to speak face-to-face with police officers in an informal and relaxed environment, with guidance given on on-line shopping scams that can take place at any time of the year, but is especially prevalent during the Christmas shopping season.

Fraudsters create fake, spoofed, and lookalike websites, with too-good-to-be-true deals on popular items to trick victims to send payments or share their credit card details and personal information.

Sandown mayor, Alex Lightfoot, said: “It was good to see local residents get up-to-the-minute information on crime prevention, as well as meet our local officers. The event highlighted what actions to take to stay safe on-line.”
