Three options under review for Cowes floating bridge

Islanders still have time to share their views on the future of the Cowes to East Cowes floating bridge, as part of the public consultation currently under way.

So far, hundreds of people have taken part in the consultation, which includes an online survey and a series of public drop-in sessions which have now finished. Two further on-line sessions will take place on August 7, 12–1.30pm and August 12, 6–7.30pm.

Anyone experiencing difficulties accessing the online sessions can email procurement@iow.gov.uk.

The consultation follows a March 2024 cabinet decision to replace the current floating bridge and to develop a new River Medina Crossing Strategy. This includes a full appraisal of options, supported by marine, legal and financial experts.

Three options are being considered, replacing the existing floating bridge, modify the existing vessel, or continue to operate the existing bridge with push-boat support.

Each option carries different cost, service and timeline implications. Consultation documents and the full options appraisal are available via iw.observer/floatie-consultation. You can also call the council on 821000 to request a paper copy. The consultation closes at midnight on August 22.
