The Great South Run

Around 25,000 people of all ages, with plenty of Island competitors, will take part in the Great South Run, in Portsmouth, on Sunday from 10.15am. Since its inaugural event in 1990, the Great South Run has built an impressive legacy with tens of millions of pounds raised for charity, and British and European records broken along the route. Following the cancellation of the 2024 event due to a storm, the Great South Run returns bigger and better than ever for a weekend celebration of running. The Festival of Running begins tomorrow (Saturday) with the AJ Bell Great South 5k (3 miles) from 9am. The festival also includes mini and junior runners. Minis, aged 3–8, will run 1.2km (0.75 miles), whilst Juniors, aged 9–15yrs, complete a 2.5km (1 1/2 mile) route. Stars of the hit BBC Show Gladiators Quang Luong (Viper) and Jade Packer (Electro) will be official race starters tomorrow.
