The River Room at CHOYD, Yarmouth, was a riot of songs and stories last Friday, at the opening evening of the popular West Wight variety show, hosted by Jean G-Owen.
First to grace the stage was Ross Westrop, with an original song ‘The Write Place’. Cheryl May paid tribute to the time of year with a jazzy version of ‘Autumn Leaves’. Musical theatre band, RazorJake (Jackie Oatley and Brian Thomas), made a brilliant debut with their nautical numbers. Another first-timer to the Figgy stage, Holly Medland, entranced everyone with her mesmerising medieval tales. Local vocalists, Tez and Dave, performed a stirring set of songs, while Tony Nicol and his chicken, with choice language, had the audience clucking in delight. Cheryl May brought mayhem to the proceedings with her ‘Last Minute Dot Com’ sketch. One regular to the Figgy Gig raved: “Wow. That was the best show yet.”
The evening closed with a rousing rock’n’roll medley, from Two-For-The-Show (Ross Westrop and Ashley Yeo).
The next Figgy Gig, at Community Hall of Yarmouth & District, on Friday November 1, promises to lift your Hallowe’en spirits. Contact Jean G-Owen on 07715 985689 or jean28owen@gmail.com for more details.
