Dear Editor,
Holmesy is right (IW Observer, February 21). The USA did invest huge sums in Europe after WWII, just as they have more recently, and lucratively, in Iraq. Still, the ‘generous yanks’ could afford it – they were late to the party (again) and didn’t have their cities flattened.
However, precious little made it to this country. We had another decade of rationing, and it’s only been a few years since we finished paying off their lend-lease scam.
Plus, we still have to pay through the nose for our ‘independent’ nuclear deterrent. So, Trump’s extortion in Ukraine is nothing unusual for Uncle Sam.
As for NATO, those figures are out of date: it’s just been announced that the USA now contributes less than half. Maybe that’s due to a couple of new, European, members – countries that have realised isolationism and appeasement won’t protect them from bullying.
