Islanders eager to welcome the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer will need to be patient – PS Waverley is on her way, but she’s taking the long way round!
After rough seas and high winds in the Irish Sea forced a dramatic change of course, Waverley is circumnavigating much of Great Britain to reach the South Coast. Originally due to sail south from the Clyde via Land’s End, the vessel instead headed north from Ayr, on Monday evening, steaming up Scotland’s west coast, across the top of the country, down the entire east coast and across to the south-west, where she is due to arrive at the weekend. Her programme of Island sailings starts on September 3.
This is the first time Waverley has taken a clockwise route around the UK to reposition from the Firth of Clyde to the south coast – and the first time she’s rounded Scotland’s northern tip since 2003. Her journey will exceed 1,150 nautical miles, compared to the usual 420-mile route and the detour will add at least £20,000 in fuel costs, with over 30,000 litres (660 gallons) required and multiple refuelling stops.
Her first Isle of Wight cruise is scheduled for Wednesday, departing Yarmouth for a round-the-Island trip and there will be sailings from the Island until September 21; some sailings are already fully booked.
