A Newport schoolboy shone at the Junior Great South Run last week, finishing second overall despite being up against boys two years older than himself.
Phoenix Docksey, eight, representing the IW Athletics Club, won last year’s mini race in Southsea, and moved up into the next category, showing he could compete against older boys, by winning his age group and coming runners-up in the 2.5km-event.
Next up for Phoenix is a regional cross-country event next month, when he will be racing some of the country’s most talented up-and-coming athletes, when he is again bottom of his age category.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge, because I enjoy the cross-country events best, as I get muddy and race as well!”
