A Shalfleet parish councillor has hit out at the state of the recently-restored Bouldnor Viewpoint path, saying the area has become ruined by overgrown vegetation, overflowing litter bins, and a rat problem.
The viewpoint was closed for several weeks, while contractors were working on the King Charles III England Coast Path project. They then left Bouldnor, without carrying out what many residents believed would be long-overdue restoration work.
Cllr Jonathan Hill has written to IW Council officers questioning why the opportunity to restore the viewpoint was not taken while the contractors were working on the site. He said:
“The recent coast path works involved contractors, plant and machinery being present on site for several weeks. Many residents believed this provided an ideal opportunity to restore the viewpoint and address a number of longstanding maintenance issues at the same time.
“The viewpoint, once known for its panoramic views across the Solent, has become increasingly overgrown, with vegetation now obscuring much of the outlook that gave the location its name.
“Bouldnor Viewpoint is also promoted as a picnic area and viewpoint. Residents question whether those descriptions remain accurate when the view is largely obscured, litter bins frequently overflow, rats are attracted to the area, and longstanding maintenance issues remain unresolved.”
An IW Council spokesman confirmed the council is aware of the concerns and said: “The works were focused on improving the coastal access route between the car park and sea wall.
“Improvements included resurfacing the path and installing new access steps, creating a safer and more accessible route that meets National Trail and public rights of way standards.
“The newly-constructed steps represent a significant improvement on the previous access route, which was narrower, steeper, and lacked handrails.
“The works carried out formed part of a specific coastal access project and were not intended to address wider site management issues within the viewpoint area itself.
“However, we recognise the importance of maintaining public spaces that residents and visitors can enjoy safely.
“We welcome all reports to the council of any issues which may require attention. The best way to reach our team is to email row@iow.gov.uk.”
