LOOK BACK IN TIME: 1 November 1919

In the Isle of Wight Observer published on 1st November, 1919, a reader called for Ryde to regain its reputation as one of England’s leading seaside resorts. Ranald M. Alexander praised improvements to the town’s seafront and urged voters to support candidates who would encourage further development and help keep rates down.

CORRESPONDENCE.

HOW TO LOWER THE RATES.

To the Editor of the Isle of Wight Observer

Sir, – Why was Ryde at one time the most popular and fashionable seaside resort in England? Because it was run by those who could see further than the end of their noses and catered for the entertainment and amusement of visitors and residents. There were no empty houses in those days, consequently lower rates. Alas, Ryde went to sleep for a long time but when our worthy Mayor, Alderman J. I. Barron, came into office, things began to brighten up and Ryde began to open its eyes again. Things are going well and when the improvements now well forward I am glad to say are finished, Ryde will possess a sea front equalled by none and will prove a fine asset to the Town.
I sincerely hope the burgesses will at the Municipal Election, rally round those who are in favour of enterprise and improvement and thus keep Ryde awake after its long slumber.
I am &c.,
RANALD M. ALEXANDER.
