No confidence in Southern Water

Southern Waters' Rivers and Sea Watch - October 21

Sandown Town Council has unanimously declared it has no confidence in Southern Water’s management of its current and proposed operations in the town, following mounting concerns over sewage discharges, bathing water quality, odour problems, and community engagement.

The resolution was passed at a council meeting on Monday, after a motion was brought forward in response to residents’ concerns. Councillors said the decision was intended not only as a statement of dissatisfaction, but also as a framework for securing improvements, accountability, and the restoration of public trust.

Among the key concerns raised were sewage discharges into Sandown Bay. Southern Water data shows storm overflows from the town’s two sea outfall pipes discharged for almost 1,621 hours during 2025, while figures presented to councillors indicated discharges rose significantly in 2024. Members warned the situation could affect bathing water quality, public health, and the environment.

Councillors also highlighted the decline in Sandown’s bathing water classification from Excellent to Good, alongside reports that some residents are choosing not to swim because of concerns about water quality.

The authority further raised concerns over persistent odour complaints, linked to Southern Water’s treatment works. Residents have reported unpleasant smells in a variety of weather conditions, with councillors questioning whether sufficient action has been taken to resolve the issue permanently.

Concerns were also reiterated over Southern Water’s proposed wastewater recycling plant, with councillors seeking stronger assurances about the operation of any future facility.

The council will review progress after three months and reconsider its position within six months. It is requesting monthly reports from Southern Water covering storm overflows, water quality, odour incidents, and progress on the proposed recycling plant.

Southern Water has confirmed it is willing to provide the reports requested.
