The Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Joseph Coelho made a visit to Cowes Library this week as part of his nationwide Library Marathon tour.
The award-winning performance poet, playwright, and children’s author is on a mission to join a library in every local authority in the UK, over 200 libraries in total, with the aim of encouraging other people, young and old, to also join their local library. Joseph is completing the South West leg of his tour on his bamboo bicycle.
Joseph said: “Libraries made me a writer and make communities thrive. They have been a vital part of my life. I’m immensely grateful to libraries and the services they provide, so I want to champion these essential launchpads of learning. I want to hug every library, these miraculous institutions where new horizons line the shelves, where minds go to grow.”
Cowes Library supervisor, Joyce Blizzard, said: “It was an honour for Joseph to come to Cowes Library and join up. Everyone enjoyed listening to him talk about himself and read some of his poems and stories. Staff in our libraries love our job as we know that they do make a difference”.
