The King’s Award for Enterprise 2025 has been jointly presented to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and HTP Apprenticeship College, recognising the success of the Careers for Young People (CfYP) programme. Founded in 2022, the initiative offers 16- to 18-year-olds the chance to build careers in health and care on the Isle of Wight, including within the NHS.
The programme was honoured in the Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility) category earlier this year, with the official presentation taking place at Newport Minster, on Friday, December 5. HM Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Susie Sheldon, led the ceremony, describing the project as “a truly innovative example of social mobility” and congratulating both organisations for their work in supporting young Islanders.
Learners, who have taken part since the programme began were present, many now employed full-time in the healthcare sector. Apprentices, Nell O’Brien and Roxy James, spoke about the difference the scheme has made to them.
For HTP Apprenticeship College, the award marks a milestone in its 25th anniversary year. Founder, Rachael Randall, said: “To receive recognition from His Majesty The King is incredible. The CfYP clearly demonstrates that apprenticeships are the route to great careers, and our Island young people have huge potential.”
Nicola Longson, from the NHS, emphasised the impact on the organisation’s workforce. “The idea was always to ‘grow our own’ and to offer new opportunities for young people. These talented apprentices are injecting energy and enthusiasm into our teams, and helping improve outcomes for our local population. It’s a win for everyone.”
