More than 200 members of Girlguiding IW enjoyed a special event at Blackgang Chine recently.
The event was organised by Island Commissioner, Wendy Macklin, and the Member Growth and Retention Team, with members from all sections attending alongside leaders. Several wore the new uniforms introduced by Girlguiding this summer.
Girls and leaders enjoyed the park’s activities and rides before coming together for a mass lunchtime picnic, giving members from across the Island an opportunity to meet and make new friends.
The train, water slides, Cowboy Town, and dinosaurs proved popular, while older girls particularly enjoyed Extinction, with its spinning and upside-down turns prompting plenty of screams.
The day also included a special presentation to leader, Tessa Bryson, from the Carisbrooke area, who has achieved her Queen’s Guide Award, one of Girlguiding’s highest honours.
Tessa joined Girlguiding as a young member before progressing through Guides, Rangers, and Young Leaders to become a leader.
Her Queen’s Guide challenges included a residential stay at Pax Lodge, in London, researching and giving a presentation on Island mental health services, gaining qualifications to take members on residential stays and camps, learning Italian, planning an international event, and helping update Girlguiding’s national scheme for Young Leaders.
Wendy presented Tessa with her Queen’s Guide badge and certificate, while County President, Susan Biss, presented her with her ‘Going Away With’ certificate.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Queen’s Guide award, which was introduced in 1946.
