Islanders push the boat out!

Paul, Xavier and Chris set off on their epic row pics: Peter Wilson & Lucy Berry

Three Islanders have set off on their adventure of a lifetime, rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean.

Xavier Baker – co-founder of the Island Distillery, iSurf owner – Chris Mannion and Ventnor firefighter – Paul Berry left La Gomera in the Canary Islands on Wednesday at 8.45am heading for Antigua in their Mermaid Atlantic boat, along with 37 other crews. They will be rowing non-stop, two hours on and two hours off in a bid to beat the world record of 35 days, 1 hour and 33 minutes.

Their mission is two-fold, firstly to communicate the detrimental effect of waste on the ocean and secondly to raise awareness and donations for charities dedicated to the protection and preservation of our natural world: Surfers Against Sewage, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and The Seahorse Trust.
