Young Islanders, aged 18–25, have completed the first Summer Skills Bootcamp run by Isle of Wight West MP, Richard Quigley’s office, gaining confidence, practical skills, and a clearer sense of the opportunities available to them.
Across the week, participants took part in workshops designed to build communication, team-work, and problem‑solving abilities. They worked together on ideas on how young people can play a greater role in local decision‑making, while developing skills in public speaking, research, presenting, and the balanced discussion of ideas.
The programme also showcased the range of opportunities already available on the Island. A visit to HTP Apprenticeship College introduced participants to apprenticeship pathways, and included a CV‑building session to strengthen employability. They met the Isle of Wight Youth Trust to learn about support services for young people, and neighbourhood police officers explained careers in public service and their role in keeping communities safe.
The week concluded at County Hall, where the young people met council leader, Jonathan Bacon, and learned how local government serves residents. They then delivered speeches in the Council Chamber, putting their newly-developed confidence and presentation skills into practice.
Speaking afterwards, Mr Quigley said he had been “blown away” by the talent and determination shown. “Many arrived understandably nervous, but by the end of the week they were standing in the Council Chamber speaking with confidence and sharing ideas. Sometimes all that’s needed is a chance to build confidence and make those connections.”
Several of those who attended have already begun exploring education, training, and employment opportunities, as a result of contacts made during the week. Richard hopes to expand the initiative and use it as a blueprint for future Skills Bootcamps.
One participant summed up the impact: “It’s made me feel a lot more positive – I can actually see a future for myself on the Island now.”
