An Isle of Wight bodybuilder has proved that age is no barrier to success after returning from Brazil with a great result on the world stage.
Lance Griffiths, 63, competed at the NPC World Masters Championships in Campinas, the largest bodybuilding competition dedicated to Masters athletes in South America. The two-day event attracts more than 2,000 competitors from around the world and is regarded as one of the highest-level Masters contests globally.
For Lance, the championships marked a remarkable return to competitive bodybuilding. His last appearance on stage was in 1989, before the sport underwent significant changes in preparation, conditioning, and judging standards.
“Bodybuilding has moved on enormously, and so has the quality of the athletes,” he said. “Preparation was extremely demanding, both physically and mentally, but I was determined to see what was possible at my age.”
That determination paid off, with Lance taking first place in the 60-plus age category and second place in the 50-plus category, competing against a field of world-class Masters athletes.
Lance thanked those at home who supported him throughout his preparation and travels, describing their encouragement as an important part of the journey.
Away from competition, he works as a coach, helping people of all ages, particularly later in life, to rebuild strength, confidence, and health.
“Great things can be achieved at any age,” he added. “It comes down to mindset, consistency, and doing the basics properly.”
