Hurries heroes head Hampshire in rugby

Fred Fairman (19) sprints to score for Ventnor 1st XV

Sandown & Shanklin Hurricanes were crowned Champions of Counties Two after winning 29-18 away at Winchester, with a dogged and determined display in the last match of the season. Skipper, Jacob Jordan, led his side by example with critical tackling and considered captaincy, with the Fairway side now preparing for Counties One.

In Counties Three, Ventnor played their best rugby of the season to beat Portsmouth 37-7 in front of an appreciative crowd at Watcombe Bottom, with Lewis Jones in his last match after five years as skipper. The Ventnor pack, with Ben Savill and Guy Entwistle, pressed from the start, with player-of-the-match, Emile Bleriot, finding Fergus Kenny, passing to Ben Cooper and Sam Line to release Jake Babington to score in the corner. A Sam Lines kick was picked up Fred Fairman and drew in the Portsmouth defence, leaving Guy Entwistle to drive over. Ed Blake’s conversion gave a 12-point lead. Despite conceding points, Ventnor maintained their momentum, with Joe Coghlan making a crunching tackle near the try line. Andy Teague scored from a loose ball for 17-7, which Grant Richardson added to for 22-7 at the break.

George Collett and Ryan Cooper joined the second-half fray, and soon gained a penalty for Emile Bleriot to kick, with Fairman found by Lines, Cooper and Lewy Morton, adding a try. Jason Coltham scored his first try for the club, after James Green, Cooper and Morton combined to create the last score of the match. Conversion made it 37-7 and the crowd joined the players to thank Lewis Jones for his leadership.

Isle of Wight secured third place in the division with the last kick of the match to beat Overton 13-12 at Wootton. The match started with IW skipper, Luke Blackman, collecting the ball near his own try-line to charge to length of the pitch to score, but the momentum stalled and IW went into the break 7-5 behind.

Sustained second-half pressure from Luke Blackman, Harri Jones-Evans and player-of-the-match, Kevin Blackburn, found George Huish to score, followed by an Overton score, leaving IW 12-10 behind with minutes left. Overton missed a penalty 15 yards from the posts. The Islanders pushed forward to win a line-out in the Overton 22, and gained a penalty. Luke Blackman initially chose to take a quick tap, but the referee gave a further penalty for encroachment and George Huish kicked to win the match by one point at 13-12.

Ventnor 2nd XV secured runner-up spot in Counties Five, winning 75-0 at home to Portsmouth. Skipper, Jack Rushton, led try scoring, with Neil Evans, William Broomfield (2), Steve Maskell, Alan Fox, Gavin Davis (2), Chris Skelly, Layton Greatorex and Dan Muir adding tries. There were conversions from Warren Riches (8), Dan Muir and Harry Colson.

IW have a remaining rearranged game away to Eastleigh II Saturday.
