Island Roads will begin a major scheme to improve the main road through Godshill next month, following consultation with the local community.
Work on the section between Godshill Primary School and the main car park will begin on November 2. The stretch has been identified as needing improvement through community feedback and Island Roads’ inspections and data.
The project will involve excavating and reconstructing large areas of the highway to address underlying ground issues that have caused deterioration since the road was last resurfaced ten years ago.
Work will pause on December 11 for Christmas, and resume on January 4, with completion planned for January 15. The scheme has permission to continue, until January 29, in case of delays caused by extreme weather.
Because deep excavations are required, the road will be closed at all times from Monday to Friday. Island Roads hopes to reopen it at weekends where safe to do so, while it will be fully open during the Christmas and New Year break.
The work has been split into three phases to minimise disruption, and scheduled after the October half term, following discussions with local businesses.
Traffic will be diverted via Rookley, Blackwater, Arreton, Ventnor Road and Canteen Road, Apse Heath.
An Island Roads spokesman said feedback from councillors and businesses had been instrumental in choosing a November start, adding: “We have taken steps to minimise the impact of this scheme.”
Island Roads plans to return next year, most likely in April, to resurface the entire road overnight.
