Female finals friendly finesse in this week’s Island bowls

Shanklin Bowls Club hosted two days of friendly, finesse-filled finals, with individual and team competition champions crowned by the county president, Carol Jones.

In the Ladies Two Bowl Singles, Ryde Marina’s Anne Bernard overcame Plessey’s Jayne Swinfield to claim the title. Anne also claimed the Four Bowl Singles, beating Maggie Lawley of Bembridge. In the Pairs Four Bowl, Bembridge’s Maggie Lawley and Alison Maundrell narrowly won 17-15, against Ryde’s Anne Bernard and Sue Green.

In the Triples Plessey’s Beth Hanson, Debbie Crews and Denise Butchers beat Shanklin’s Julie Wilson, Karen Norris and Sue Thomas. The Tours were won by Ryde’s Anne Bernard, Sam Williams, Carole Wolton and Leen Hampshire, overcoming Plessey’s Steph Ball, Joyce Utteridge, Barbara Herbert and Jane Swinfield. The Senior Fours were won by Shanklin’s quartet of Julie Wilson, Janet Jones, Karen Norris and Sue Thomas, with runners-up Alison Maundrell, Maggie Lawley, Gay Allen and Debbie Small from Bembridge.

Carol Jones said: “It was a really good weekend of bowls, with a very high standard of play from all involved. Congratulations to the winners. The Island continues to be well represented, and punch above our weight on the national stage.”

Also, over the weekend, in Men’s Division One, leaders Cowes Medina A won 10-0 (74-43) at home to Bembridge A, Ventnor A won 7-3 (59-58) home to Ryde Marina A, and Plessey A won 10-0 (63-38) at home to Cowes Medina B.

In Division Two, Ventnor B won 8-2 (64-47) at home to Newport A, Ryde Marina B won 10-0 (58-50) at home to Camp Hill A, Plessey C won 10-0 (79-43) at home to Cowes Medina C, and leaders, Plessey B, won 8-2 (61-44) home to Shanklin C. There were away wins for Shanklin E 10-0 (98-21) at Totland B, and 2nd-placed Ryde Marina C 8-2 (62-48) at Ventnor C.
