There were carols, entertainment and late-night shopping in Cowes on Thursday, as the town’s Christmas lights were switched on.
Children from Lanesend Primary School entertained shoppers, with a selection of carols outside Sainsbury’s. The festive light switch-on followed, and the live entertainment continued throughout the evening in the High Street and Bath Road areas.
Cowes Mayor, John Nicholson, said: “I was supposed to do the switch-on, but the children from Lanesend were so good I asked their teaching assistant, Maddie, to do the honours with one of the carol singers, which went down very well.
“The lights look lovely but they cost us a fortune. Someone suggested we get some solar-powered lights which we can keep up throughout the year and switch-on for special occasions. It’s a great idea, but, sadly, we couldn’t find anywhere to source them!
“It was also nice to see lots of shops making an effort to support the event by staying open during the evening.”
