Community champion honoured for his work

Nigel Hartley presents John with his award

A stalwart of Aspire, Ryde, has been presented with a prestigious High Sheriff Award.

Volunteer, John Fisher, was described as a ‘man who wears many hats’ by the charity, which provides more than 8,000 free meals a year and supports some of the most disadvantaged people in the community.

John was recognised by the High Sheriff, Nigel Hartley, who attended the presentation with the Mayor of Shanklin, Sara Sheath.

Karen Eeles, of Aspire, said: “John has made an incredible contribution to Aspire and our community. He wears many hats at Aspire, and we mean many!

“One day he’s running our Adult Music Club, the next he’s a youth mentor. When he’s not doing that, you’ll often find him in the kitchen, supporting Laura, Aspire’s chef. He also takes on the chef role for our Shanklin projects. He cooks and serves food for our monthly music group too!

“Somehow, when he’s not mentoring, making music, or cooking, he finds time to pick up his camera and support our events in a media role.

“But what really makes John special isn’t the number of things he does. It’s the thought and care he puts into helping other people. He has made a genuine difference to our young people, our projects, and our wider community, and we have got to celebrate him for it.”
