Freshwater café closes four years after rescue

Freshwater café, Cath and Mike’s, has closed four years after regular customers helped them take over the lease to keep the venue open.

The couple announced last week: “It’s been an absolute blast, but all good things have to come to an end. It is with the heaviest of hearts that we are closing the café.

“We thank you all for your continued support throughout our tenure, and wish you all the best in the future. We will see you all around town; we will miss each and everyone of you. You’ve become family to us both.

“We would like to take this opportunity to wish the new owner all the very best.”

The couple had previously run the daytime café in the building in School Green Road for around two and a half years, sharing it with Chinese restaurant, Petesaria, which opened in the evenings.

But they were given the opportunity to take over the café when Petesaria closed at the end of 2022. At the time, the couple did not have the funds needed to take on the lease, but their regular customers raised almost £10,500, with an unprecedented level of support.
