Club’s centenary celebrations in this week’s rugby

Hurricanes veterans in action at home to Trojans

IW Rugby concluded its centenary season celebrating promotion from Counties 3 to Counties 2, despite losing 36-12 away at Eastleigh in the final match of the season.

Player-of-the-match James Webster stood out for the Islanders, which started with IW’s Keith Wallace finding Dan Bishop to drive over, for George Huish to convert for a 7-5 lead in the first quarter. But the team failed to maintain momentum to trail 19-7 at the break.

Eastleigh’s powerful centre and fast-of-foot wingers added 3 further tries, but the Islanders finished strongly, with Huish starting a move that saw the reliable Luke Blackman score the final try of the season. Celebrations started for Stuart Browne’s swan-song appearance, having started in the 1980s, and the side securing third place and promotion after four seasons finishing in 6th place.

The Club holds its AGM on May 1, and presentation night on May 25, with summer touch rugby to follow, as the club’s second century begins.

Sandown & Shanklin Hurricanes celebrated their success in winning Counties 2 and gaining promotion to Counties 1, with their awards evening on Saturday, May 11, with the Veterans playing cup matches in the coming weeks.
