To support two leading Island charities, more than 20 British Gas colleagues and their friends cycled a full circuit around the Isle of Wight, in the sweltering summer heat to raise essential funds.
Setting off from East Cowes, the group tackled a tough 105km (65 mile) clockwise route with more than 1,400 metres (4,600 feet) of climbing on some difficult terrain. The route took in some of the Island’s dramatic coastal cliffs and rolling downs, with a well-received stop en route at a welcoming pub offering relief from the scorching sun.
This year’s ride raised £1,660, with further support expected through Centrica’s corporate match and the Big Give initiative. Funds will benefit Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat and The Isle of Wight Wave Project. Since 2018, the British Gas Isle of Wight cycling team has raised more than £16,000 for charities including The Brain Tumour Charity, Applegate Breast Care Unit, and Testicular Cancer research.
Paul, British Gas IW leader, said: “Although the rides feel tougher as time goes on, the impact we’re making keeps us motivated.” His colleague, Lee, added: “It was fantastic to see new faces joining the challenge this year. Long may it continue!”
