Yarmouth on ice before Christmas

Yarmouth is to be transformed into a spectacular ‘Winter Wonderland’ with a synthetic ice rink in December.

The ice rink will be set up in The Square taking over the car park directly in front of Gossips Cafe.

The unique project is the idea of Danny Arthur, manager of the town’s Harwoods Yacht Chandlers, and Mandy Miles, its director. Danny explained: “Basically, last Christmas was cancelled, so Mandy and myself thought that maybe we could set up something that would be fun, and different, for everyone, not just people from Yarmouth, but the whole Island.

“We looked into organising a synthetic ice rink and we have got the latest version which is only 18 months old. However, the costs were frighteningly expensive. So, the next step was to ask local businesses to help us with setting it up.

“Thankfully, we were so fortunate that the businesses responded. This is a not-for-profit event; any money we generate will be spread among smaller charities across the Island. It’s about putting a smile on people’s faces and putting some fun back into Christmas.”

The ice rink, which will be covered by a marquee so people can enjoy the experience in any weather, will be open between Saturday, December 11 and Wednesday, December 22.

There will be two late night shopping opportunities on December 18 and December 22, when Father and Mother Christmas (Rob and Josie da Bank) will be available for a visit in the town hall.

There will also be push-along penguins for younger children, subject to availability.

Danny added: “This year, Carols in the Square will be held on December 18 when the town’s Christmas tree lights will be turned on. The Salvation Army Band will be there as usual and we hope that there will be a big crowd to celebrate this special annual popular event.”
The event’s sponsors include Wightlink, Spence Willard, The Terrace, Salty’s, Harwoods, Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners, The George Hotel and Beach Club, Island FX, Harveys, Yarmouth Barbers and Connoisseurs, Yarmouth Food Lovers Market, On the Rocks, Wight Marine and River Yar Boatyard.
