Music lovers are in for a treat with two performances of Giacomo Puccini’s moving opera, Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica), performed by the Voices of the Isle of Wight at Quarr Abbey at the end of the month.
Suor Angelica is the tragic tale of a woman who bears a child out of wedlock and is sent to a convent to repent for her sins. She finds out that her son has died and, in her distress, Angelica resolves there is only one option left for her to see her son again. A clarity comes over her as she makes a poison from her herb garden and drinks it. In her agony she screams for the sisters that she has committed suicide, a mortal sin, and an offstage prayer asking for forgiveness can be heard. As Angelica dies, a miracle appears.
You can enjoy an afternoon tea in the marquee before the performance, available from 1pm with the performances on June 28 and 29 starting at 2.30pm. Cream tea will be served complete in individual boxes.
There will be a selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones available, with vegetarian options. £14.99 each or with a glass of Prosecco £19.99.
Booking is essential as there are limited places available.
The IW Observer has teamed up with our friends at Quarr Abbey, to give away a pair of tickets for afternoon tea, including Prosecco and tickets for the opera to two lucky readers. The tickets can be used on either Saturday, June 29, or Sunday, June 30.
