Freshwater Independent Lifeboat is urging Islanders to ‘Buy a Brick’ to help complete major renovations to its lifeboat station.
Founded by the local community in 1972, the independent lifeboat relies entirely on donations to operate. Its station was last refurbished in 2008, and the charity is now undertaking a significant upgrade to create a safer, more functional and future‑ready base for its crew.
The ‘Buy a Brick’ appeal has already had a strong response, with more than 450 bricks donated at £50 each, alongside the £595,000 the charity has committed to the project. A further £160,000 is needed to complete the full scheme, which will deliver safer machinery storage, a dedicated upstairs space for training and community use, and a larger, more efficient shop to help fund annual running costs.
Work is already under way, with Stoneham Construction completing the footings and concrete pours. The lifeboat team is now appealing for more residents and local businesses to get involved.
Station upgrade lead, Josh Macgregor, said: “We’re really grateful for all the support so far. This station exists because of our community, and every brick purchased will directly support the project and help shape the future of our lifesaving service.
“Whether your brick honours a loved one, celebrates your family or simply shows your support, it will become part of our new building, and be remembered for generations.”
All names will appear on a permanent display wall inside the new station. The exterior is expected to be complete and weathertight by July, with internal works progressing as funding allows.
Bricks can be purchased via iw.observer/filb-appeal or for more details email fundraising@freshwaterlifeboat.org.uk.
