WIGHT IN WESTMINSTER: Richard Quigley MP — Labour MP for IW West

Summer recess was exactly what I needed – not because it was a long break (though I did enjoy a week off with my family), but because it gave me valuable time to focus on the constituency.

As an Island MP, I usually spend Monday to Thursday in Westminster. So when Parliament isn’t sitting during recess, it gives me a valuable opportunity to spend even more time in the constituency, engaging with local issues.

One of the ways I’m able to do that is by holding regular in-person surgeries. Of course, people phone or email in – but it’s important constituents can speak directly with their MP. Surgery appointments are typically 15 minutes and give constituents an opportunity to raise or discuss a particular issue. So I’m pleased to confirm dates for autumn/winter surgeries already. If you’d like to request an appointment, please email richard.quigley.mp@parliament.uk or call the office on 244980 with your preferred date: September 19 (waiting list), October 3, November 14 and December 5.

Sadly, I’ve also seen an increase in the number of people contacting me over domestic abuse incidents – with many unsure of where to turn to. Which is why my team, and I, wanted to ensure that we can support those brave enough to come forward with the right information. That’s why I want to say a thank you to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary for organising a specific briefing for us over the summer recess. We found it really useful to hear from specialist officers, and it was good to develop that rapport with local officers.

While the headlines are often dominated by negative stories, I was truly heartened to see our community rally around the Daisy Bus service and the incredible efforts of people like Michèle Newton. Faced with a funding cut, local people and businesses came together – donating time, money, and expertise – to keep this vital service running. So I’m really pleased that a CIC (Community Interest Company) is now being setup. And as an MP I remain committed to doing everything I can to support the service.
