As Parliament prepares to break for the summer recess, from July 23 to September 1, it offers my team and I a valuable opportunity to reflect and set our goals for the upcoming parliamentary calendar. With Westminster quietening down, and MPs returning to their constituencies, it’s a chance for all of us to reconnect with the people we represent and the communities we serve.
That’s why I’m so pleased that the Island will benefit from three new ‘Best Start’ hubs. Many of us will remember the transformational impact of the last Labour government’s Sure Start centres, which not only provided tailored support to families but also saved the NHS millions of pounds. These new hubs, opening in Newport, Ryde, and Sandown by April 2026, represent a modern continuation of that proud legacy.
This, coupled with the fact that 7,530 children on the Isle of Wight, will begin receiving free school meals from September 2026, is yet another demonstration of the Government’s commitment to supporting families across the UK and on the Island. For me, this is precisely the kind of change that motivated me to get involved in politics – so I’m absolutely delighted.
As Westminster winds down for the summer, my team and I have been working hard to ensure that government legislation continues to support the most vulnerable in our society. That’s why, in partnership with the brilliant charity Young Lives vs Cancer, I was proud to table an amendment to the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill. Our amendment sought to guarantee that cancer patients are automatically entitled to the higher rate of Universal Credit – without the need to undergo a capability for work assessment.
While the amendment was ultimately not selected for a vote by the Speaker, I was encouraged by my meeting with the Minister, Sir Stephen Timms, who listened carefully to the proposals and committed to working with me and the charity to ensure cancer patients receive the support they need during such a difficult time. I look forward to continuing this important work with Young Lives vs Cancer and championing their cause across Westminster.
