An arrest in Newport caused quite a scene when a man was pounced on by plain clothes officers.

One passerby filmed the event on their mobile device as they were unsure what was happening due to the lack of police uniforms.

A 24-year-old man was removed from a vehicle before being restrained on the ground whilst screaming loudly on Tuesday (July 31) at around 5.30pm.

The Coppins Bridge incident saw three undercover officers detain the man in connection with a driving offence.

He was later released from custody without charge but remains under investigation.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “A 24-year-old man from Lake was arrested at Coppins Bridge roundabout shortly before 5.30pm on Tuesday (July 31).

“He was arrested on suspicion of two things, firstly obstructing or resisting a constable in the execution of their duty and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment alarm or distress.

“That was following a driver dispute and a public order incident. He has been released from custody without charge and remains under investigation.”
