The 2021 Sports Achievements Awards

Medina Theatre provided the backdrop to an evening of celebration of sporting success, achievement and voluntary contributions, hosted by double Olympic Gold medallist, Shirley Robertson OBE, and local journalist, Lucy Morgan.

Amongst a host of highlights, former Lake Middle School teacher, Ron Cook, was named Club Volunteer of the Year, netballer Ann Selby received the Lifetime Achievement Award, with Robin Courage MBE and Gillian Burnett given awards for their outstanding contribution to sport, presented by the Island’s Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon.

The Island’s beach soccer side won Team of the Year, with Luke Kerr given the Making A Difference Award, The Trustees of Waterside Pool received the Ray & Rosemary Scovell Trust Community award, disabled sailor, Natasha Lambert, won a Senior Award, and Diane Gould, Coach of the Year. Up and coming athletes, such as Swansea University first-year student, Ellie Lovett, is on track to represent the Island in the Inter-Island Games in 2023.

Since the award evening, discus thrower Ellie has achieved a personal best of 42.91m at the weekend, ranking her 2nd in the UK under-20s and 14th in the UK’s Senior Ladies.

With 24 awards honouring the dedication and commitment of individuals and teams across the generations, the evening showcased the best of Island sport, with the organisers thanking sponsors for their generosity and ongoing support.
