TC’s – Totally Committed

Former High Sheriff, Judi Griffin, returned to Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre, 30 years after officially opening the centre and launching its youth club, TC’s. The visit was to celebrate its continued success, thank volunteers who have contributed over the years, and plant commemorative roses in memory of those involved at the start of the project.

Coinciding with national Make A Difference Day, Judi presented a special letter from Volunteering Matters. Information panels were also unveiled, highlighting the centre’s success in receiving Green Flag Awards over the past 30 years, as well as the achievements of Shanklin VYCC FC.

Mrs Griffin said: “It was a great celebration, and huge congratulations to you all for creating and continuing with such a successful, much-needed, enjoyable, safe place for generations of Shanklin young people.”

Shanklin VYCC has received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the 4Children National Youth Award, Home Office awards for its work with young people, and other regional and national accolades.

Highlights of the past 30 years have also included visits from personalities such as Level 42’s Mark King, television presenter, Fred Dinenage, former High Sheriff, Alan Titchmarsh, and Prince Edward.

The centre’s first member, and now leader, Mark Biddlecombe, said: “As a wholly voluntary youth centre, we have regular attendances of over 150, and offer a week-long programme of activities for the youth and community of Shanklin and south-east Wight.”

Volunteers, Paul Biddlecombe, Jon Gilbey, and Christine McDermott received special mugs produced by WightSolutions. Gonks, knitted by Jane Priest, who originally created the mascots in 1996, also featured in the celebrations.

Commemorative roses were planted in memory of Bridget Biddlecombe, Paul McDermott, and Dave Wood, who were instrumental in the 1996 renovations and the project’s subsequent success.

Mark concluded: “Thanks to the dedication and commitment of volunteers over the past 30 years, the centre continues to adapt to the changing needs of young people. It is a credit to all involved and, with a special Hallowe’en night coming up, we have more events planned for this special year.”
