‘Strawberry Pain’ was followed by cake

The start line

Under crisp, sunny skies on Sunday morning, Wight Tri members took on the second event in their winter duathlon series, aptly named ‘Strawberry Pain’. Held in Brighstone, the event proved to be a stern challenge, with the course offering conditions reminiscent of a ‘Tough Mudder’.

Entrants had the option of covering a longer 6km (3.7 mile) run or tackling a shorter 3.9km (2.4 mile) route before moving on to the cycling segment. The bike course consisted of one or two laps of a picturesque 10.9km (6.8 mile) route, taking riders through the scenic landscapes of Brook and Mottistone. However, the highlight – tough for some and thrilling for others – was the formidable ascent up Strawberry Lane, a section with a punishing 21.7 per cent (roughly 1 in 5) gradient.

After the challenges, the event concluded with its trademark camaraderie. Members were treated to well-deserved cake and hot drinks at the finish line.

Awards recognised outstanding performance, with Daron Perkins taking the prize for closest to their predicted time (just 45 seconds off) and Craig Wilson claiming the title of fastest overall on the long course in 1h 44m 30s.

Wight Tri’s next duathlon is scheduled to take place at Colwell on Sunday, March 9, starting at 9am. The event is open to anyone looking for a challenge. All you’ll need is a bike, helmet, and trainers to join in. For more information, contact secretary@wighttri.org or go to iw.observer/wight-tri.
