Island drivers can expect speed limit changes and temporary road closures this month, as part of a wider push to improve safety and infrastructure across the network.
The Isle of Wight Council has introduced a new 40mph limit on Hale Common, Arreton – replacing the previous 50mph zone – as the first step in a Department for Transport-funded Safer Roads fund. The changes follow a detailed risk review of the A3056 between Sandown Road, Lake, and Blackwater Hollow.
Councillor Julie Jones-Evans said the measures aim to “increase safety for all highway users,” and reflect public consultation and accident data. Further speed reductions are planned in Arreton, Lake, and Merstone, in future months, alongside new pedestrian access at Hale Common.
Meanwhile, Island Roads will begin two major resurfacing projects this month. From Sunday, Ventnor Road, in Apse Heath, will close for two weeks for deep excavation and foundation rebuilding. Once that work is complete, Main Road, in Arreton, will shut for three days for similar works. Both projects are weather-dependent and may be subject to change.
Island Roads said the closures are necessary to strengthen the highways and reduce future maintenance. Diversion routes will be clearly marked, and residents along Ventnor Road have been contacted to discuss access needs.
