Scallywags Fun Club is closing

A popular fun club for children, ‘Scallywags’, is hoping to keep on going despite having to close its base in Lake.

Sarah Wherry, who founded the club at Broadlea Primary School, 27 years ago, said: “I’m gutted for everyone involved. We’re not just an after-school club but a holiday club as well. We have 75 children attending each day out-of-term with us serving them a hot meal. We also have a programme supporting vulnerable families and we’re part of a short breaks programme with social services links.

“Broadlea are having major building works done, and, although we knew a year ago that the works were going to take place, we have been given four weeks to close. We have been offered a new space, but I have to work with Ofsted, and it’s not good enough for what we provide. I’m gutted for our staff and the families who have worked so hard to support us. But we want to keep going. We have had a lot of support locally, so I’m hoping we may be able to find somewhere else.

“We would also like to thank all the wonderful children, families, professionals and staff that have passed through our doors and made Scallywags Fun Club the most amazing out-of-school club for 27 years.”

Scallywags is due to close on Friday, March 31.
