Sandown Carnival has double success on the weekend

The sun shone down on Sandown as residents and visitors were treated to a day-long feast of family entertainment at the town’s carnivals on Saturday.

From the Children’s Carnival in the morning to the Main Carnival parade in the evening, thousands flocked to the area to enjoy the fun.

‘Little Monsters’ were awarded first prize in the Children’s Carnival while the Girling Family came in striking Stars Wars themed costumes. The children were also entertained at Sandham Gardens with magicians Stevo and Kai.

The main event in the evening included Carnival Queens from across the Island with Sandown’s ‘royalty’ parading in a ’traditional tea shop’ along with a group of ‘cowboys and indians’ while the Regatta Hat Factory boasted a giant Pierrot costume designed and worn by artist Joel Lines. There was also plenty of music from, among others, the Medina Marching Band.

Sandown Carnival chairman, Paul Coueslant, said: “We’re really pleased our visitors and residents had a day to remember – now we move on to Sandown Bay Regatta the weekend after next when we hope the sun stays shining!”

Paul also had a special word for the team behind the organisation which has entertained Sandown since Victorian times. He added: “As the longest-running community group in town, we’re run entirely by volunteers who are proud to carry on the tradition of providing free events each year, and we’re forever grateful to the public for their donations which help us cover our costs.”
