A Ryde School student’s debut oil painting has been selected for display at the Royal Academy’s Young Artists’ summer show in London this July.
Janice, a Year 13 pupil who lives on the Island, was one of a small number of young artists chosen from over 23,000 entries submitted nationwide.
The painting, which will also feature in Ryde School’s own summer exhibition next month, was inspired by a photo Janice took during a rainy car journey while visiting family in Malaysia. “We were in the car and it was raining really heavily,” she said. “I felt very calm at that moment and took a photo. I thought it would be a good idea to use it for my final coursework.”
Janice had no idea her work had been entered into the Royal Academy competition and described being selected as “a big surprise”.
“I’m really happy it’s been chosen,” she added. “I think it’s something that makes people feel different emotions.”
Before it heads to the capital, the painting will be on display at Ryde School’s summer exhibition on Thursday June 5th, from 5pm to 8pm.
The event is open to the public and free to attend.
Art teacher Natalie Broughton said: “we’re incredibly proud of Janice, for her first oil painting, it’s a remarkable achievement. The talent across the school continues to impress us every year.”
