Ryde revel in rain- reduced run race in this week’s cricket

With weather affected fixtures, on and off the Island, there were note-worthy scores for Ryde’s Ben Shannon and stalwart, Andy Day, as well as Freshwater’s Mike Holliday, with all-rounder, Lara Crouch, top-scoring for Newport Ladies, and taking a couple of wickets.

Premier and Hampshire Leagues

Ryde 1st XI won by 98 runs at home to Hythe & Dibden, with the Islanders batting first. Opener, Ian Hailes, hit 40, with middle-order Ben Shannon adding an unbeaten 64 including 7 fours. Andy Day contributed 50 at over a run-a-ball, to see Ryde reach 206-7 in their 45 overs.

With conditions changing, the visitors were set a revised total of 161 from a reduced 27 overs. Skipper, Ben Gregory, took an early wicket, with Ash Goldsmith returning 4-22 off 9 overs, and there was a wicket apiece for Mark Tuckwell and Ian Hailes. The Island side limited Hythe to 62-7 at the end of play, to claim the win and move to third in Hants league 2B, one place below Ventnor II.

Both Ventnor matches were cancelled, and Shanklin & Godshill’s fixture at Bedhampton Mariners was abandoned after the home-side scored 167-7. Matt Lambourne and Nathan Moore claimed 2 wickets each.

IW Leagues

In Division Two, Freshwater won by 115 runs away at Arreton. After electing to bat, openers, Mike Holliday (68) and Graham Gosden (22), shared a 67-run partnership. Skipper, Gary Freeston, added a quickfire 55, to see Freshwater complete their innings on 259-7. Pete Tarrant took 3-23 in 3 overs, and Pete McClelland 2-51.

Arreton’s reply suffered regular losses, with opener, Louis Vanassche, striking 37 including 5 boundaries, and mid-order Tony Blaize contributing 53 before being stumped by wickie, Steve Holbrook. Arreton were all out for 144 in the 33rd over, with Glen Bailey (3-12) and Gary Freeston (3-10) the pick of Freshwater bowlers, as Freshwater claimed victory.

Newport women beat Arreton by 93 runs, with Lara Crouch hitting 29 from a total of 151-4 off 20 overs, with Mia Norris and Kim and Roxy Powell taking a wicket each. In reply, Robyn Milne top-scored with an unbeaten 27, as Arreton were all out for 58, and Lara Crouch and Georgia Dye claimed 2 wickets each for Newport.
