Randonee attracts 3,000 cyclists from far and wide

Cyclists from across Europe and the USA were among the 3,000 participants involved with the annual Isle of Wight charity Randonee on Sunday.

There were five start and finish points at East Cowes, Wootton, Bembridge, Ventnor and Freshwater.

The Randonnee followed the Round The Island cycle routes in a clockwise direction and there was a choice of 100km (62 mile) or 55km (34 mile) rides, with first starters off at 9am and finishing at 6pm.

The event was established by the Wayfarers in 1985 and, uniquely, follows a route around the whole of the Isle of Wight taking in minor roads and lanes where possible enabling the rider to see and enjoy the best of the Island’s scenery.

A spokesman said: “The organisers would like to thank villages, as well as the local community, businesses, and schools, who let us use their premises, plus the PTA groups for providing the feed stations.

“Once again, through the generosity of the participants, we will be able to donate a substantial amount of money to Island charities.”
