A new community project is shining a light on Ryde’s lesser known LGBTQ+ heritage. StoneCrabs Theatre’s ‘Out on an Island’ initiative, is celebrating the working class LGBTQ+ histories of venues such as Oz and Patsy’s on Union Street.
While the IW is often associated with grand historic homes and seaside tourism, this project turns attention to the everyday places that once buzzed with queer life bars, clubs, and meeting spots, many of which have now disappeared or changed names. Focusing particularly on the 1980s and 90s, the project aims to document and creatively share memories from Ryde’s LGBTQ+ community.
StoneCrabs is inviting residents and visitors with memories of these spaces to join informal discussions and workshops. The first meeting will take place on Tuesday (May 20), from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at The Department, Cross Street in Ryde. The session, held in the accessible Fitting Room, offers a warm welcome, refreshments, and a chance to connect with others.
“This isn’t about castles or stately homes,” said Project Manager Caroline Diamond. “It’s about the spaces where real life happened, where people danced, laughed, and found community.”
