Opera magic at the Alzheimer Café

Sally performing on Wednesday

Visitors to the Totland Alzheimer Café were treated to an unexpected musical highlight, on Wednesday afternoon, when internationally acclaimed lyric soprano, Sally Matthews, dropped in to hear the West Wight Dementia Friendly Choir perform.

Word had spread quickly that Sally, one of Britain’s foremost operatic performers, would be attending, and the café was buzzing with anticipation. Choir members and guests began with warm ups and group singing, before enjoying a series of solo performances from Sally, who captivated the room with renditions of Waltz of My Heart, Sometimes, and I Dreamed a Dream.

Barry Jackman, who was among those present, said the atmosphere was unforgettable. “Music did its magic and memories were re-lived,” he said. “It felt as though the Royal Opera House had come to Totland. The shared enjoyment in the room was something really special.”

The Alzheimer Café, which runs regular sessions in the West Wight, aims to provide support, companionship, and uplifting activities for those affected by memory loss.

Barry added: “Seeing everyone come together through music was a pleasure. It was a reminder of how powerful these moments can be.”
