Newport cops keep order at Carisbrooke C of E in surprise ‘Op BRUM’

Officers from Newport’s Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out a special operation on Wellington Road outside Carisbrooke C of E Primary School from Monday to Friday (September 24 – 28).

The action was taken following concerns raised by parents and members of the public about road safety in the area.

Officers patrolled the area every day between 8.30am to 9.30am and from 2.45pm to 3.45pm as part of “Operation BRUM”.

They spoke to drivers to ensure the road was safe for children to cross and that drivers were not causing unnecessary obstructions.

PC Ben Sharland said: “The operation was a real success, we received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from parents walking their children to school.

“We issued one fixed penalty notice for leaving a vehicle in a dangerous position and provided over forty drivers with information sheets. Our policy was to issue everyone with an information sheet and only to issue a fixed penalty notice to those who had already been warned.

“We will repeat the operation with no notice at various times during the school year to reinforce the message.”
