New mural for The Cut

Cowes Town Council recently ran a competition for local primary school children to create a new design to replace the Island Games mural at the popular seating area in The Cut, off Cowes High Street. Councillors selected their favourite parts from each of the shortlisted designs, which were all by pupils from Cowes Primary School.

Local artists and residents, Chris and Maddy Dobson, offered their time for free to create a design based on the original drawings. They outlined the design on the mural wall and arranged for the painting of the mural. The mural was largely completed with the assistance of two students from Carisbrooke College, one from Ryde Academy and one from the Island Learning Centre. Amey, the Island’s waste contractor and Red Funnel also provided staff to assist with the painting of the new design.

Councillor Lora Peacey Wilcox, Mayor of Cowes Town Council, said: “My sincere thanks and gratitude to each person who helped to create a full picture of Cowes from the Hammerhead Crane to the Squadron. A truly Cowes team effort. Please take time to go and have a good look.”
