A new passenger ferry service is set to launch on Thursday (October 2), providing fresh competition to Wightlink on the Yarmouth–Lymington route. Operated by Quay 2 Quay in with the support of Yarmouth and Lymington Harbour Commissioners, the service will increase choice and capacity for Islanders, visitors, and commuters.
Sailings will be operated by Kraken, a 15-metre catamaran with enclosed and open seating for more than 100 passengers, with onboard refreshments available. The vessel promises a modern, comfortable experience for those travelling between Yarmouth Harbour and Lymington Town Quay.
Magnus Gundersen, director of Quay 2 Quay, said: “As someone who lives close to Lymington, it became clear there is a real need for an alternative crossing. This is a very exciting opportunity, and a real credit to the Yarmouth and Lymington commissioners. We now look forward to operations beginning and providing additional passenger choice.”
Richard Quigley MP, Isle of Wight West, welcomed the move: “It’s great news that Kraken is finally able to commence passenger sailings. Competition in the cross-Solent transport market is very welcome and offers Islanders even more choice.”
Tim Adams, Yarmouth harbourmaster, added: “We are delighted to accommodate Quay 2 Quay in our busy harbour and wish them every success.” Lymington harbourmaster, Matt Wright, echoed his comments.
The service will begin with weekday sailings, expanding to a full timetable in the months ahead.
