The Crab & Lobster in Bembridge has welcomed a new executive chef, with well-known Island figure Stuart Downes — also known as “The Bear” — now leading the kitchen.
Stuart, formerly of the popular Hungry Bear, brings a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for using fresh, seasonal produce. With a background in hospitality training and a long-standing passion for seafood and crustaceans, he is aiming to put The Crab & Lobster firmly back on the Island’s culinary map.
This summer, diners can expect a renewed focus on local seafood, with expertly grilled fish, vibrant shellfish dishes and bold coastal flavours that celebrate the Island’s marine heritage.
Stuart is also set to introduce his signature Hungry Bear Roast later in the year, a dish many consider among the best on the Island, thanks to his continued relationship with the Character Inns Group. He said: “I’m really excited to have joined The Crab & Lobster. It’s a fantastic location with huge potential. Over the past four weeks I’ve focused on retraining the team, raising kitchen standards and preparing for re-inspection. We’re determined to deliver the quality our guests expect and deserve.”
Stuart’s new menu is being served throughout the summer.
