Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre (SVYCC) is celebrating, after its Victoria Avenue green space was awarded the prestigious Green Flag, the international mark of quality for well-managed parks and open spaces.

Volunteers at the centre, who also care for the County Ground (home to Shanklin Football Club) and other sites in the town, were praised for their dedication in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming place for the community to enjoy.

Green Flag award scheme manager, Paul Todd, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved. Quality parks, like Victoria Avenue, make the country a healthier place to live and a stronger place to invest.

During the cost of living crisis, this is a free and safe place for families to enjoy nature, and socialise.”

SVYCC leader, Mark Biddlecombe, thanked the centre’s volunteers and said the award recognised their ongoing efforts. “The green space is just one part of what we do,” he said. “We’re also taking part in local carnivals this summer. I’m grateful to all those who help keep it looking its best.”

The Green Flag scheme is run by the charity, Keep Britain Tidy, and sets the national benchmark for parks and green spaces across the UK.
