New app can help speed up release from hospital

In January, St Mary’s Hospital saw approximately 50 patients each day fit to be discharged, but unable to leave due to logistical difficulties. In December, and again in March, with its capacity severely strained, critical incidents were declared at St Mary’s, due at least in part to delays in patients ready to be discharged, blocking vital beds needed for new admissions.

The cause of many delays lies in the often-complex process of arranging care or necessary equipment at home or in other care settings, a daunting task which can fall upon families unfamiliar with what needs to be done and what support may be available.

Amidst this crisis, the innovative and free-to-use app, myra, has been launched, to streamline the transition from hospital to home for older adults. By providing essential national and local information all in one place, myra helps co-ordinate care arrangements during and after discharge, and helps users avoid readmission.

Developed on the Island, the personalised information provided by myra assists patients, their families, and hospital staff, navigate post-hospital care arrangements, including hiring any necessary equipment, understanding benefits available, and tapping in to local support.

By empowering users, myra can ultimately improve patient outcomes and alleviate strain on hospital resources. You can download myra at any time to ensure it is available when you need it to help you get out of hospital with a smooth transition.
