With political unrest sweeping the country following the stabbing of three young girls in Southport, Richard Quigley MP has reported a threat of violence to the police.
The newly-elected MP for Isle of Wight West received the threat via social media and was asked not to make details of the threat public.
It followed controversy over a statement issued by the Conservative Police & Crime Commissioner, Donna Jones, which blamed the new Labour government for bringing in Violent Crime Units, which, she claimed, had led to accusations of “two-tier policing” which had “enflamed [sic] protesters”.
Isle of Wight East MP, Joe Robertson, distanced himself from Ms Jones’ comments, saying she could speak for herself. He added: “There is no debate about policy issues that can give context to hurling bottles, assaulting police officers, looting shops, and using fireworks as weapons. It is criminal thuggery and should be met with the full force of the law. The scenes from some of our towns do not present a suitable backdrop to have a debate about immigration or British values.
“The police deserve our full backing in trying to restore order to our streets and bring criminals to justice.”
