Laurel and Hardy seen in Shanklin and Sandown

Jean Papworth and her friend, Diane Hetherington, walked from Shanklin to Sandown Pier and back dressed as Laurel and Hardy in memory of Jean’s late partner, Barry Parsons.

Barry died in May 2019 of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a condition in which the lungs become scarred and breathing becomes increasingly difficult. They planned the walk two years ago to raise awareness and funds for two charities which research lung conditions and provide help for people living with them; however, due to Covid, the walk had to be delayed until last weekend.

Jean said: “We will split any money raised equally between Asthma + Lung UK and Breathe Easy IW. All funds that go to Breathe Easy IW stay on the Island to support Islanders who have lung conditions. Barry was Ventnor born and bred and they were a great support.

“Barry loved Laurel and Hardy so we dressed up as the comedy duo and walked in his memory. He was taken too soon by this dreadful disease.

“We have already raised over £400, with some money still to be collected.”
