IW Rugby Club celebrates a classic centenary

Veteran Ollie Boulter drives forward in Centenary match

IW Rugby celebrated it’s centenary with an afternoon of fierce but friendly fixtures, involving former and present players, including a mixed touch-rugby match between Wight Wolves and Vectis. An U-10’s match highlighted the club’s strength and the event culminated in the President’s XV v Club XV match.

Established in 1924, the ‘Rangers’, with their seahorse crest, continue to enjoy success at their Wootton home. They have developed Youth and Women’s sides, and their Men’s first XV is currently third in Counties 3.

A club official said: “The hearts have been sung and voices now rasp, our beer cellar is drunk dry and – more importantly – our walls of the Fortress are still echoing with laughter this morning.

“The weekend wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work from our volunteers. Thank you, to Mr Pres, for the match, Mr Leahy for the Touch game, The Simpsons for food as always and our amazing bar staff who kept your whistles wet all day and evening.”

The last weekend of the season sees the Hurricanes away at mid-table Winchester 2nd XV, as they push for promotion as champions. In Division Three, IW welcome Overton and Ventnor host Portsmouth 2nd.
